The Fiat Yamaha rider and current Championship leader secured second place on the grid for Sunday’s Gran Premio d’Italia TIM, and immediately wished his injured team-mate a speedy recovery.
Jorge Lorenzo, who is going for a third successive win on Sunday at Mugello, will start the fourth round race from the front row after qualifying in second position, between pole position holder Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner.
Joining Pedrosa as the only other rider to go under 1’49” this weekend in the sessions leading up to Sunday’s race, Lorenzo maintained his record of having qualified on the front row for every race so far this season. His first words after taking second spot however were to wish his team-mate Valentino Rossi a quick recovery after the Italian fractured his right tibia in a crash in the morning practice.
"Firstly I want to say how sad I am for Valentino. I know how bad it is to be injured, especially at your home race, and it looks very painful for him. I hope he recovers quickly because the Championship will not be the same without him,” said the 23 year-old.
Lorenzo was fast throughout qualifying and enjoyed the consistency in lap times that some small tweaks to the set-up of his factory M1 gave him.
“Today we made some good steps forward and I am very happy about how my bike is feeling here in Mugello,” he stated. “I have a good race pace, the Bridgestone tyres feel good and I think I can make a fight tomorrow. We have to stay calm, focused and concentrated and hopefully it will be a good race for us here in Italy, at the home track for many of my team."
Lorenzo has qualified in second position for the last two rounds, at Jerez and Le Mans, both races he has won.
